NECA's Bangor Facility Features Non-Invasive Treatment for Angina
Northeast Cardiology Associates (NECA) has announced the addition of ECP (Enhanced External Counter Pulsation) to its extensive line of in-house testing and treatment services for Maine heart patients.
ECP, (Enchanced External Counter Pulsation) is a safe, proven, non-invasive out-patient treatment for angina patient who are not candidates for more traditional treatment options. Approved by the FDA, and covered by Medicare and many insurance programs, ECP treatment has been successfully used for thousands of patients, with the positive effects often lasting many months to years following treatment.
The treatment is conducted for an hour each weekday over a seven-week period. During the procedure, the patient lies on a bed attached to an electrocardiographic monitor with a pressure suit (resembling large blood pressure cuffs) applied to the legs that assist in delivering increased blood flow to the heart at precise intervals.
After ECP, many patients experience a noticeable reversal of angina symptoms. Improvements may include less angina symptoms, increased exercise capacity, and an improved quality of life.
"ECP is a proven, effective alternative to bypass surgery for many angina pectoris patients," says Robert M. Hoffmann, MD, FACC, president of Northeast Cardiology Associates. "We're very pleased to be able to offer this service to our patients and their referring physicians."
